Powell To O’Reilly: ‘Why Do You Only See Me As An African-American?’ [VIDEO]

During a Tuesday night interview on The O’Reilly Factor, former Secretary of State Colin Powell challenged Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly for a remark that Powell viewed as racially insensitive.

“Here’s what perplexes me,” O’Reilly said, responding to Powell’s statement that he did not agree with the Republican Party’s economic policies. “President Obama’s economic plan hasn’t worked among African-Americans…so you basically said to yourself, ‘I’m still going to support the guy, even though his economic policies haven’t worked for African-Americans, and pretty much anyone else.'”

“Why do you only see me as an African-American, Bill?” Powell shot back. “That troubles me. I’m an American.”

Throughout the wide-ranging interview, O’Reilly pushed Powell on a number of topics, including Powell’s assertion that there is a “dark vein of intolerance” in the GOP.

“You have to understand the impact this has on minorities throughout our country; and if you want to appeal to these people, if you want to bring them to the Republican Party and give them a reason to vote Republican, you have to avoid this kind of language which can infuriate people,” Powell told O’Reilly.

At the end of the interview, O’Reilly asked Powell if he’s angry with Republicans because they “made you look bad” after his work making the case for the Iraq war.

“That’s a bunch of nonsense,” Powell replied dismissively.
